Number of credit cards in circulation jumped to 15.5mn in 4Q 2010

This posed a 1.6% quarter-to-quarter increase and a 6.6% year-on-year increase.

According to Hong Kong Information Services Department, the Monetary Authority said credit-card transactions went up 4.3% q-o-q and 9.1% y-o-y as there were 98.2 million credit-card transactions. The value of credit-card transactions was $106.3 billion, up 14.5% and 20.4%.

The number of debit-card transactions in relation to retail sales and bill payments grew 7.9% to 27.5 million as total value increased 17% to $51.5 billion.

The total number grew 4.9% and the total value rose 14.8%, compared to the same period in 2009.
